After Sir David Wilkie (Scottish, 1785-1841), "The Gambler," early 19th c.,

oil on canvas, indistinctly signed lower left "Whogreth/Wiengreth?", presented in a giltwood frame,
H.- 22 1/4 in., W.- 16 3/4 in., Framed- H.- 26 1/2 in., W.- 20 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Property from the Estate of Murphy A. Bourke, New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Condition: The painting exhibits past signs of professional restoration. It has been relined and sized with rabbit skin glue. The surface is clean and free of craquelure. On the left side of the painting, there are three long vertical (equally spaced) lines that exhibit thick inpainting under UV light and in raking light (oblique angle). The lines are more pronounced at the top and at the bottom. The spacing and placement of them suggests that it was once folded/rolled and had creases with losses. The lower bottom and left side of the background exhibit areas of inpainting. There is an inpainted patch behind the ear and a few inpainted "touch-ups" scattered throughout. There is a light horizontal scratch with a small flake loss to the lower right.
