Rare Antebellum Mississippi River Map, "Coast-Directory (Algiers to St. John Parish)," by Charles J. Pike, 1847,

lithograph ribbon map on paper, printed in seven sections and mounted on linen with wood rollers, published Fishbourne's Lithograph, New Orleans, 1847, linen backing faintly inscribed with the name James Hazelett?, possibly James W. Hazelett from Miller Plantation, Madison, Louisiana, found in 1860 census records,
H.- 81 in., W.- 8 1/2 in., Overall- H.- 82 in., W.- 12 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: By Descent in a New Orleans Family.
  • Notes: This rare antebellum map is a precursor to Adrien Persac's famed "Norman's Chart to the Lower Mississippi", and depicts the plantations, towns, businesses, and landmarks along the Mississippi River between Port Hudson and New Orleans, providing vessels with detailed information on river distances, and Parish and property lines across three municipalities. Since 2000, only one other map has been offered at auction and sold for $15,275 (with buyer's premium) at Cowan's Auction in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Dec. 8, 2010, as lot 347.
  • Condition: The top section of the map exhibits the most wear and condition issues, as is to be expected from the rolled nature of the map. There are tears, cracks and losses to the top edge and to the left and right sides with the linen backing exposed. Soiling, stains and water marks are also present. The other six sections are in better condition with only a few tears/losses to the left and right map sections; the majority of the issues are small tears and abrading/ losses to the border edges. Throughout the sections there is toning, creasing, soiling and small scattered spots of foxing. The wood scrolls have nicks, scratches, losses and wear to pigment. The linen backing is structurally intact with soiling and remnants of a name: James Hazelett?, possibly James Hazelett of the former Miller Plantation (in the early 1860s) in Madison, Louisiana. The map is overall good condition given age, material (a thicker, almost wax lined paper), and maritime use.
