Alexander John Drysdale (American/Louisiana, 1870-1934), "Autumn Evening After a Shower," 1916,

oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, titled on stretcher, remnant of W.E. Seebold framer's label on frame backing, presented in a bronzed wood frame,
H.- 25 in., W.- 44 in., Framed- H.- 32 5/8 in., W.- 51 5/8 in.

  • Provenance: The Estate of William Prentice Farrington (1950-2025), New Orleans, through descent, from the Olivier, Hero, Castanado, and Farrington families of New Orleans.
  • Condition: In overall very good condition. The painting is on a course handwoven canvas that has not been relined. There is a small patch repair en verso that corresponds to an indentation with small flake losses and pin-sized hole (now cover and stabilized by the patch) located at the top center cluster of tree canopies on the left facing side of the canvas. The loss is also visible under UV light as the surface disturbance fluoresces dark purple. Under UV light examination, no inpainted repairs were detected. Very dark areas of burnt umber and green pigments appear along the left bank line, right bank line, and in the reverse lit hanging moss and lower limbs of the Live Oak tree. These do not fluoresce and they are homogenously scattered throughout with the same refraction of light as is seen in these very dark areas under natural white light. Drysdale's oil paintings from the 1910s, as opposed to his later oil washes, are rich in layered pigments- as can be seen in the UV light photographs. The painting has fine craquelure and some surface soiling (most visibly to the sky). The canvas exhibits faint horizontal and vertical stretcher bar marks. This work is a large, remarkable example of Drysdale's virtuoso with the oil medium.
