Blake Boyd (1970-, Louisiana), "Chef Eugene Temple, Cafe Reconcile", 2017, archival pigment print on 100% cotton rag paper, embossed signature on lower right corner of photograph, unframed, artist-wrapped in plastic, H.- 28 3/4 in., W.- 24 in., NOTE: Beginning in 2007, after the post-Katrina flooding destroyed 80 percent of New Orleans, Boyd undertook to document both the human cost and human spirit in the wake of that calamity in a deceptively simple yet extraordinary way. He began taking Polaroid-film portraits of people associated with post storm recovery, both famous and quotidian, from all professions and endeavors and from all walks of life. Initially, this project, "Louisiana Cereal," was to capture one hundred icons of the the State. Boyd's post-Katrina model has captured an entire American community at a critical moment in its fight for survival, ranging from firefighters, storekeepers, artists, chefs, politicians, writers, musicians, and celebrities. "Louisiana Cereal" has become more than a series of photographs, it is a chronicle of the life force of an American community that suffered. Portions of this sale will be donated to Cafe Reconcile 501(c)(3).
