Gib Singleton (American/Missouri/New Mexico, 1935-2014), "Lady with a Bowl," 20th c.,

bronze, signed and numbered "A/P" edition on self base, mounted on a wood base,
H.- 32 in., Dia.- 6 1/8 in.

  • Provenance: Note: Gib Singleton was a distinguished bronze sculptor whose work primarily explored themes from the Bible and the American Old West. After completing formal studies in art, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, which enabled him to study the techniques of the Old Masters in Florence. His expertise led to his recruitment by the Vatican workshop, where he contributed to the restoration of Michelangelo's "Pieta". Upon returning to the United States, Singleton dedicated himself to refining his artistic style while facing significant financial hardships. A transformative moment occurred when he recognized that the emotions evoked by viewing art in a museum were as tangible as the artwork itself. This realization led him to define his artistic approach as "Emotional Realism," a style in which he sought not only to channel his personal struggles but also to create a profound emotional connection between the viewer and the artwork. Although he became well known for his depictions of the American West after relocating to New Mexico, his most renowned works are his religious sculptures, particularly the crucifix atop the papal staff originally used by Pope John Paul II and later carried by Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.
  • Condition: In overall very good condition with no visible losses or repair. Nice patination. There are a few white accretions on the back, possibly smudges from being displayed against a wall, which can be easily removed with cleaning.
