Giuseppe de Nittis (Italian/France, 1846- 1884), "Pont Neuf at Twilight,"

oil on canvas on board, signed lower left, "F.S. Lankhoorn, Amsterdam" label en verso, presented in a giltwood frame,
H.- 11 1/4 in., W.- 14 1/2 in., Framed- H.- 17 in., W.- 21 in.

  • Provenance: Property from the Estate of Murphy A. Bourke, New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Notes: In the professional opinion of the CCAG painting department, this work is by the hand of Giuseppe de Nittis. Originally, it was catalogued as attributed to the artist as the first cataloger did not see the signature. After the signature was discovered and compared to several examples by the artist,  it was determined to be consistent with other extant oeuvre by the artist: the style and subject was comparable. De Nittis painted several Paris bridges, including the Joan of Arc statue on the Pont Neuf. There is a limited edition the 1990 catalogue raisonne by Allemandi and Torino on the artist, but only a handful of those works have been digitized. The label on the back- a mid century gallery/ framer's shop in Amsterdam was known to sell other plein air and impressionist works. In addition to the currently listed provenance, it likely also sold at F.S. Lankhoorn before it was acquired c. late 1990s by the late seller. Similar examples to this work can be found through auction database results including "The Westminster Bridge" that sold at Bonhams, London, 31 March 2021, lot 64.
  • Condition: In overall good conserved condition. The painting is on canvas laid down on board. Under UV light, several layers of varnish fluoresce green and there is inpainting to the rooftops and to the equestrian monument with a possible repair before it was laid down. Other minor inpainted "touch-ups" are scattered throughout. Under white light, surface soiling is visible and the variations in varnish- inpainted repairs have not been revarnished and therefore have a more matte finish in raking light. No craquelure is present.
