MaPo Kinnord (1960-, New Orleans), "#2 Gold from the Wakemia Series," 2018, painted ceramic, H.- 33 in., W.- 10 1/2 in., D.- 2 1/2 in., NOTE: This work is one of three ceramic works inspired by "ceremonial ladles, known as wunkirmian or wakemia (which translates as "spoon associated with feasts")" traditionally carved in wood by the west African culture of the Dan. They are created as symbols of generosity to honor the hospitality of a specific woman of a community. The Wunkirle (title of the holder of the ladle) has the responsibilities of hosting important meals, and feeding travelers and preparing the large feast that accompanies masked ceremonies. Over the years I have marveled at the power and variety of Wakemia forms. The West African sculptural aesthetic is present in New Orleans along with the value of hospitality. MaPo Kinnord grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and began her clay commitment in a Quaker high school arts program. She apprenticed with several production potters before receiving a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1984 and MFA from Ohio State University in 1994. In 1995 she moved to New Orleans where she is now an associate professor of art at Xavier University of Louisiana. Portions of this sale will be donated to Cafe Reconcile 501(c)(3).
