Rare Miniature Sinumbra Lamp, Attributed to William Carleton (1797-1876), Boston, c. 1840,

together with an additional base and shade, both acid etched copper wheel cut shades have applied upper rims, one with a bracelet,
Lamp- H.- 16 3/4 in., Dia.- 6 1/2 in.; Lamp Base- H.- 8 3/4 in., W.- 3 3/4 in., D.- 3 3/4 in.; Extra Shade- H.- 6 3/4 in., Dia.- 7 in., (both shades with 5 1/4 inch fittings) (3 Pcs.)

  • Provenance: From the Collection of William Friedle and Norris Garrison, New York, NY / New Orleans, LA.
Note: this particular model can be identified to similar examples- one in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, object number: 2014.694a-d, gift of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart P. Feld, 2014: and the other present in the earliest known photograph of a U.S. President, John Quincy Adams, the 6th President, in 1843, by Philip Haas, a former president serving in Congress at the time; this iconic daguerreotype is now held by the National Portrait Gallery.
  • Condition: Surface dust, dirt, accretions throughout, as well as general surface scratches and wear consistent with age and use. The larger lampshade has a small chip on the rim, and the smaller shade has a few minor chips along the rim as well. Spots of oxidation and verdigris are present on the base of the main lamp. The paint on the font reservoir is chipping, however the tank retains its original cap and neither lamp has been drilled. Burner parts are largely intact- lacking wick adjuster and chimney. One font arm has been resoldered, and the font rim is lightly bent. The shade fits nicely into the rim, but it is not a "snug" fit. Fitter rim diameter is 5 inches.
